Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana) (Malayalam: നീലക്കുറിഞ്ഞി) (Tamil: நீலக்குறிஞ்சி), is a shrub that used to grow abundantly in the shola grasslands of the Western Ghats in South India above 1800 metres. The Nilgiri Hills, which literally means the blue mountains, got their name from the purplish blue flowers of Neelakurinji that blossoms gregariously only once in 12 years. The Paliyan tribal people apparently used it to calculate their age.

Neelakurinji is a bell shaped flower which blooms once in twelve years. During its bloom, it turns the hills of Nilgiri into a beautiful shade of blue. There is a local variant of this flower in Munnar which is expected to mass bloom this year between September and December. The next major bloom that’s the 12 year cycle version should be in 2018.

However there are at-least 8 species of the flower. The Munnar variant’s flowering cycle is four years ahead of the rest of the Neelakurinjis in the Nilgiris belt i.e. the last major bloom was in 2006 and the next major one in this belt is in 2018 happens in Munnar only. As per the estimate, around 10 lakhs tourist visited neelkurinji at munnar during the last massive blooming period that happened in the year 2006.
