About Lakshadweep:
Lakshadweep is the smallest Union Territory in Indian Union having 36 small islands with total 32 square kilometers area scattered over 30000 square miles of Arabian Sea along the west of Kerala state. Formerly Lakshadweep was known as Laccadive, Minicoy and Aminidivi islands and later the name was changed to Lakshadweep by an Act of Parliament in 1973.
The name Lakshadweep in Malayalam or Sanskrit means “a hundred thousands of islands”. Kavaratti is the capital of this Union territory and the only air strip available is at Agatti. 10 inhabited islands of Lakshadweep are Andrott, Amini, Agatti, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan and Minicoy.
About the people and culture: People of Lakshadweep are traditional, very lovely and most of them are well educated. Majority of the population belongs to Muslim community. Islanders have very close relation in terms of business as well as culture with People of Kerala. Malayalam is the common language spoken in Lakshadweep along with Mahi (also known as Mahl) – a local language used especially by people of Minicoy. Main occupations of people living at island are fishing, coconut cultivation and tourism related activities. Tuna fish is the main export item from Lakshadweep.

Monsoon: June- September (better to avoid journey as tourist)
Ideal time for visit at Lakshadweep is from October to March. During this time Lakshadweep have cool and pleasant climate with temperature from 20to 32 degrees.

Climate similar to Kerala. Tropical clothes mainly cotton preferred. Carry water proof clothing and umbrellas during Monsson. NUDITY is banned even in beaches

Coconut based and sea foods are commonly available food at Lakshadweep. Generally food items are spicy. ALCOHOL even beer is PROHIBITED and NOT AVAILABLE in island except Bangaram.

How to Get Permit to Enter Lakshadweep:
Unlike any part of India, Lakshadweep needs well prior preparation before visiting as the administration limits the number of entry to islands to preserve its nature and culture. All visitors need to apply for a permit from Lakshadweep Tourist office at Wellington island Kochi. It is better to contact a local tour operator based at Kochi who is doing Lakshadweep tour packages or a friends at Lakshadweep to obtain the same. It’s always suggested to visit Lakshadweep either through a tour operator who is well versed with Lakshadweep or Lakshadweep Tourism authority (SPORTS)

Lakshadweep is the smallest Parliament (Lok Sabha) constituency by number of voters. About Lakshadweep Administration: The entire Lakshadweep forms a single district and is governed by an administrator appointed by the President of India. The present administrator is Mr. Farooq Khan – a senior IPS officer. Administrator in his capacity as Inspector General of Lakshadweep Police has command and control of the Lakshadweep Police. Administration Secretariat is in Kavaratti. The entire Lakshadweep comes under the jurisdiction of the Kerala High Court at Kochi along with a system of lower courts
